COMPASSIONATE THERAPY when you’re OVERWHELMED, OVERWORKED and UNDER-RESOURCED
A private virtual practice
based in Toronto
You’re carrying a lot.
While it might feel like it, your emotions won’t kill you.
Through an EFT and IFS-informed lens, I help you balance your needs with your ambitions and create a warm, curious, and attuned space for you to (ugh, yes) feel your feelings.
As a queer, first-gen immigrant ex-lawyer, I am intimately familiar with the burnout, perfectionism, self-doubt and anxiety that arises, especially if you are neurodivergent and/or navigating corporate, academic, and professional expectations on your own.
It can be hard to know what support might look like when you've learned to adapt and cope on your own for so long.
CHIN PHING TAN (she, they) REGISTERED PSYCHOTHERAPIST (QUALIFYING), JD, MEd
I am a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) with a Masters of Education in Counselling Psychology from the University of Toronto.
I am a member of the Law Society of Ontario. Previously I practiced in charity and immigration law. I live in Toronto and offer virtual and in-person support to clients across Canada.

Once we have confirmed a time for your consult, you will receive a confirmation email from Jane. A meeting link will also be emailed an hour before our consult.
A consult is a time for both of us to assess fit. I will typically ask for more information about what brings to you therapy and you can ask any questions about my approach or background
Some things to prepare for our consult:
5 minutes before your session, settle into your space and focus on what you’d like to talk about during the consult.
Feel free to bring any grounding/stim objects and toys (a pillow or blanket, smooth stone, etc.) during consults or sessions.
-
I integrate a variety of evidence-based therapeutic modalities, primarily using emotion focused therapy (EFT) and Internal Family Systems (IFS), to address your unique concerns and create a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

I have a warm, collaborative and curious approach. I can provide a structured conversation but am also happy to go at your own pace, explore and meander.
If there's a particular event or focus you'd like to explore, we can start there. During our first few sessions, I’ll check in on your goals for therapy. We may also explore your childhood and family background (it’s a cliche for a reason), how you tend to relate to others, and your relationship with grief, conflict, or anger. From there, more questions and areas of focus may emerge.
I utilize a trauma-informed approach and it’s important to me that you feel like you have agency even in times of challenge.

I primarily use an Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) approach to my work with couples. EFT is a brief, systematic approach that is a well-recognized and researched form of couples therapy. EFT assumes conflict happens when couples get caught in negative emotional patterns (”the cycle”) that feel like they are repeating the same fight over and over without finding resolution. I help you identify your cycle by looking underneath the fights to the emotions and needs that underlie and drive that conflict.
Together, we will help create new ways for you to understand and relate to each other, structuring enactments that build trust, safety and security within the relationship.
-
Partners/couples will start off with an initial session to explore their relationship histories and what their relationship is like in the current moment. We will also further address any concerns to enable me to make this a safe and therapeutically useful space for both of you.
After this initial session, I will meet with each partner for a separate session. Once that is done, we will come back and decide on shared goals and the plan for achieving those goals going forward.
Maybe you have trouble separating your values and ambitions from other people's expectations and hopes.
If you're caught between cultures, with complicated family dynamics that are difficult to untangle, I offer a judgement-free space to let out your confusion, your angers, your griefs.
